I learned a lot about the time of reconstruction, divisive politics, and some of Andrew Johnsons core beliefs. I disagree with the thought that Johnson was one of the worst presidents. He seems to me to have been one of the best. Without his policies the wounds of the civil war may have never healed.
Great guides. Very helpful nice and Beautiful sites all right in town.
As with most of the National Parks, the Andrew Johnson NHS is well put together and very informative. Currently (10/2017), the homestead is under renovations and is not able to be toured. There are still several buildings, the visitors center, early home, and replica of the birth place to see. A short drive down the road will take you to the Andrew Johnson National Cemetery. Johnson is buried on the top of the hill with an astonishing 2000 veteran plots surrounding the hill.
It was a very fun and interesting place visit and learn. The staff were great. Will be back to visit again
I'm proud to live in East Tennessee where there is so much history. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing how President Andrew Johnson lived. I've been told that when Andrew Johnson was a tailor in Johnson Co., TN he was good friends with my great, great, great grandfather Col. Samuel Northington. I would love to find anything corroborating that story.
